How many months do your savings last?
A free runway calculator for people who earn or hold rupees and dollars. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Your runway
Tight3 to 6 months
3 to 6 months. You have a buffer, but it is below the common 6-month target. Build it before taking on new fixed costs.
- Monthly spending
- PKR 252,500
- Monthly income
- PKR 429,750
- Monthly surplus
- PKR 177,250
Rupees or dollars: where to hold your cash
A simple rule: keep about two months of fixed costs in rupees, because rent and bills are paid in rupees, and hold the rest in the currency you prefer.
| Measure | PKR | USD |
|---|---|---|
| Total cash, at your rate | PKR 933,000 | $3,274 |
| Suggested rupee cash (two months of fixed costs) | PKR 347,000 | $1,218 |
| Suggested dollar hold (everything above that) | PKR 586,000 | $2,056 |
| Your actual split | PKR 420,000 | $1,800 |
Why two months? You avoid converting dollars in a hurry, at a bad rate, when a bill is due. It is a planning heuristic, not investment advice.
How the number is worked out
Runway in months = the cash you can reach within days, divided by one normal month of spending.
Unsafeunder 3 months
Cash is thin. Cut variable spend or add cash before investing or converting dollars.
Tight3 to 6 months
A buffer, but below the common target. Build it before taking on new fixed costs.
OK6 to 12 months
A solid buffer. Decide on purpose where extra cash should go. Aim higher if your income is irregular, you freelance, or you support dependents.
Fat12 months or more
A large buffer. Ask whether idle cash is losing value to inflation.
Two common mistakes
Counting money you cannot spend this month, such as provident fund, property or IOUs. And using a flattering dollar rate. When unsure, use the worse rate.
Want to track it every month?
This page answers once. The Runway OS workbook keeps the record: Excel or Google Sheets, no macros, no login, no live data. You type your numbers once a month.
You do not need to buy anything. The calculator and the method above are complete for a one-time check. The workbooks are new, so there are no reviews yet. Checkout is handled by Polar and the files download straight after. Planning tools, not financial advice.

Short answers. Nothing here is personal financial advice.
How many months of savings do I have?
Add up the cash you could spend within a few days: bank balances plus any dollars, converted at a rate you could really get. Divide by one normal month of spending, fixed bills plus variable spend. The result is your runway in months. The calculator above does exactly this.
How big should an emergency fund be in Pakistan?
A common rule of thumb is 3 to 6 months of spending, and more if your income is irregular, you freelance, or you support dependents. It is a planning rule, not personal advice. This calculator labels under 3 months Unsafe, 3 to 6 Tight, 6 to 12 OK, and 12 or more Fat.
How should I split savings between PKR and USD?
One simple approach: keep enough rupees to cover about two months of fixed bills, because rent and utilities are paid in PKR, and let the rest sit in whichever currency you prefer. The calculator shows that split using your own numbers. It is a planning heuristic, not investment advice.
Which USD to PKR rate should I use?
Use the rate you could actually transact at with your bank or exchange, not a headline or screenshot rate. If unsure, use a slightly worse rate for planning. The default of 285 is only a starting assumption.
What counts as cash for runway?
Only money you can spend within days: bank balances, wallet, cash at home, and dollar accounts. Leave out provident fund, property, jewellery you would not sell, and money other people owe you.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser with plain JavaScript. There is no account, no backend, and nothing is saved when you close the tab.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is an arithmetic tool with rule-of-thumb labels. It does not know your tax, your job stability, or your goals. For decisions that matter, talk to a qualified adviser.
